The continuous provision is proving to be a huge success with the children and there are lots of fantastic pieces of work both in their books and on display.  The provision is an invaluable way of the children being able to show their independent skills that they have been taught.
We are delighted that Mrs Fogden is helping in class on a Tuesday afternoon.  We would also like to thank all the parents that give their time to come and listen to the children read.  We also have plenty of other ways that parents could help out (for example sewing).

Phonics
Our phonics teaching is based on a programme called 'Letters and Sounds' which is followed from Reception into Key Stage 1.  We make regular assessments of children's learning to inform planning for progression.  Teaching is adapted to the range of children's abilities.  In Year 1, pupils complete a Phonics Screening Check and are tested on their reading of real and nonsense words.  Children have opportunities to apply their phonic skills in reading and spelling activities.  The processes of segmenting and blending sounds is taught in a multi sensory way to make phonics learning enjoyable and fun.

Reading
Developing in children a love of reading is key to children becoming confident successful readers.  We use Oxford Reading Tree to support our children's home reading development.  Books are sent home for shared reading with their reading log with the expectation that books are shared and the log filled in.  Our aim is that the children have the phonics skills to decode words confidently and to understand the texts before moving on to the next stage.  In Guided Reading, which takes place in groups, the children are usually reading at a more challenging level which may be above what they are reading at home.  We use a range of texts which includes alternative Oxford Reading Tree texts which are not sent home.   The emphasis in Guided Reading is on teaching comprehension strategies.  We use different genre of texts; including information and poetry as well as narrative.  We work on developing the skills of; reading aloud with understanding and expression, understanding and describing events and ideas from texts, infer or interpret information from texts and comment on the author's use of language.
