Our Learning in English
Year 3
We have been studying Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. We have used the book to develop our reading and writing skills. In our writing we have used the voice of Michael (the main character) in the first person, writing diaries, recalling events and personal descriptions. This term year 3 have been reading the Iron Man by Ted Hughes. We explored how the author uses exciting words to create atmosphere. We also looked at the relationship between Hogarth and the Iron Man. We used the book as a model for our writing, we wrote lost of poems using our descriptive words and onomatopoeia as well as our own descriptive seems of the Iron Man standing on top of a famous building. The Iron man was also an inspiration for some of our art work. |
Year 4
This term we have been studying Romeo and Juliet. We have done lots of drama, the party and fight scenes being our favourites. We have also written a modern day opening to the play. This term year 4 are reading 'The Hobbit' and following the journey and dangers of the characters' quest. The book is full of descriptive language, tension and action packed scenes. We will use the book to both learn about punctuation and grammar but also to stimulate our imagination for our writing. We are using lots of drama techniques to explore the text and to help us understand the emotions and motives of the characters. |
Visit To Middleport PotteryAt the beginning of the Autumn term class 3 visited Middleport Pottery. This visit was the start of our local history topic. The children were really interested to see inside a real bottle oven and back at school we learnt about the different jobs there were in a pottery factory and used drama to understand how difficult this type of work was. We also learnt about the importance of canals for the pottery industry and how Stoke on Trent has changed.
We also loved seeing the poppies and this helped us to think about all the soldiers who had dies when we had our Remembrance assemblies. |
