Our visit to Stanley Head - March 2020
In March our year 3, 4 and 5 pupils visited Stanley Head outdoor Education centre for 3 days. We had the most amazing time doing lots of activities that challenged us and developed our independence, resilience and team work. We also made lots of very special memories too.

Our class mantras for this year are:

Topic - We have been learning about Europe.

Here are some interesting facts that we found out.

Did you know...

"Approximately 260 different languages are spoken in Europe."

"The smallest country in the world is in Europe. It is called the Vatican City and is where the Pope lives."

"Lots of seas surround Europe including the North Sea, Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean Sea."

"About 11% of the world’s population live in Europe."

"If you cross the Bosphorus Bridge in Istanbul in Turkey, you cross from Europe into Asia. Istanbul is also one of the largest cities in the world."

"Europe is home to many of the oldest countries in the world, including San Marino, France and Denmark."

"Most people agree that Europe was named after Europa, an ancient Greek moon goddess."

"Most people agree that Europe was named after Europa, an ancient Greek moon goddess."

Art
Our artwork has been inspired by our local area - The Potteries, Clarice Cliff, Vincent Van Gogh and maths with some rotational symmetry art!
Have a look through our gallery.

Computing
We have been learning how to code simple programmes and created our own games.

Music  - we have been learning to play the recorder.

Maths - We are continuing to love 'active maths' we even invited the parents to come along and join in!

Science
This term we have been learning about the human body. We are able to name and locate the major bones in the human skeleton. We also compared the human skeleton to those of different animals.
We have also been learning about animals and their habitats. We are able to use classification keys to name unknown plants and animals, as well as, learning about the different environmental issues facing our planet and what we can do to help save the endangered animals.

We have been learning about solids, liquids and gases and how the molecules inside each are different. The molecules inside a solid are closely packed together. The molecules inside a liquid are more spread out so they can move around a bit more. The molecules inside a gas are really spread out.

We have learnt about Light and Dark. We have done lots of experiments to find out how shadows are created and how the size of shadows change. We really enjoyed creating out own shadow puppets using our hands. We have also learnt about how we get day and night by pretending to be the sun and the earth.

Our Learning in English

Year 3
We have been studying Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. We have used the book to develop our reading and writing skills. In our writing we have used the voice of Michael (the main character) in the first person, writing diaries, recalling events and personal descriptions.

This term year 3 have been reading the Iron Man by Ted Hughes. We explored how the author uses exciting words to create atmosphere. We  also looked at the relationship between Hogarth and the Iron Man. We used the book as a model for our writing, we wrote lost of poems using our descriptive words and onomatopoeia as well as our own descriptive seems of the Iron Man standing on top of a famous building. The Iron man was also an inspiration for some of our art work.
Year 4
This term we have been studying Romeo and Juliet. We have done lots of drama, the party and fight scenes being our favourites. We have also written a modern day opening to the play.

This term year 4 are reading 'The Hobbit'
and following the journey and dangers of the characters' quest. The book is full of descriptive language, tension and action packed scenes. We will use the book to both learn about punctuation and grammar but also to stimulate our imagination for our writing.
We are using lots of drama techniques to explore the text and to help us understand the emotions and motives of the characters.

Visit To Middleport Pottery

At the beginning of the Autumn term class 3 visited Middleport Pottery. This visit was the start of our local history topic. The children were really interested to see inside a real bottle oven and back at school we learnt about the different jobs there were in a pottery factory and used drama to understand  how difficult this type of work was. We also learnt about the importance of canals for the pottery industry and how Stoke on Trent has changed.
We also loved seeing the poppies and this helped us to think about all the soldiers who had dies when we had our Remembrance assemblies.

Remembrance Day

The children in class three along with the other classes have each made a poppy and attached this to a wooden cross. Each child then planted their cross in our school grounds.
