Keeping your children safe on the internet and other interactive devices can sometimes feel like an overwhelming task—but you’re not alone. We understand how quickly technology changes and how difficult it can be to stay up to date with the latest apps, websites, and games your child may be using. Below is some helpful advice, along with trusted resources to support you in keeping your child safe online.
One of the most important steps in protecting your child online is understanding the platforms they are using. Here is some key information about popular social media platforms:
Instagram is not suitable for children under the age of 13. The platform has strict Terms of Use and Community Guidelines that make this age requirement clear. It is also closely connected with other adult-oriented platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, meaning younger users may be exposed to inappropriate content or interactions.
Facebook also has a minimum age requirement of 13, and its platform includes features that may not be suitable for younger users. More information can be found on the BBC's report on Facebook and underage use.
Twitter's policy clearly states:
“Our services are not directed to persons under 13. If you become aware that your child has provided us with personal information without your consent, please contact us at privacy@twitter.com. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, we take steps to remove such information and terminate the child’s account.”
We strongly encourage parents to monitor their child’s use of social media, check privacy settings regularly, and have open conversations about appropriate online behaviour.
